By the first modern war, I take it as the war in which the first warfare technique still implemented today was used.

I think it is the war in which the shape of war today is most defined.
BTW I love hearing the different points of view.... makes for good discussion!!!

The Cossacks and the mailed knights from the Crusader period.... The ones that Anna Komnene said "could put a hole through the walls of Babylon"!

Bufords Calvery from the civil war. They put a stop to the confederate advance and kept Lee's army of northern Virginia from taking the heights surrounding the town effectively capturing a union victory. Also I believe the Civil War was the first modern war in the terms of the use of total war methods, riffling in weapons, use of long range artillery, the first metal ships were being used at the time. IT also foreshadowed the carnage of WWI as defenders almost always won the battles in the civil war. It also saw the first use of machine guns and repeating rifles. Though the tactics were outdated the weapons of war were in the early stages of modern warfare. The civil war also saw the first use of Air recon using hot-air balloons. Snipers also saw there first use in the civil war. And don't get me started on the manufacturing side of warfare that is still used today.

Also, pretty sure they used long rang artillery in previous periods of history. But you are so right on the hot air balloons.
