We'll the Gatling gun was the predesasory to the machine gun in the same way the bow was to the crossbow. The long range artillery was mostly used in ships as they were to cumbersome to move on land. But it was the manufacturing end of the war that truly made it the first modern war.

Even though there was no combat involved, it was the cold war, because we are still fighting it. Only we're calling it the war on terrorism. The Russians are just as involved today as ISIS. They even rescued Syria from a war with the U.S. by buying their guns but letting them use them still. Also U.N. is a leach of an alliance inhibiting effective tactics that could save our live's in combat. The cold war and the war on terrorism are one in the same.
